The town of San José (Baja California) belongs to the municipality of Tecate. The Magical Town of Tecate is 14 minutes away by car (13 km). Of all the towns in the municipality, it occupies the number #107 in terms of number of inhabitants.

The locality was formerly known as Rancho San José, but changed its name a few years ago. The inhabitants of this community decided to change its name in 2010.
