The town of Santa María belongs to the municipality of Bahía de Banderas (State of Nayarit). It's a beach town: the beach of Playas Vallarta is 16 km away. The Magical Town of Sayulita is 43 minutes away by car (35 km). Of all the towns in the municipality, it occupies the number #162 in terms of number of inhabitants.
The locality was formerly known as Rancho Burgueño, but changed its name a few years ago. This town decided to change its name in the year 2010.
The town of Santa María is located at 6.6 kilometers from San José del Valle, which is the most populated locality in the municipality, in the Northwest direction. In addition, it is located at 5.4 kilometers from Valle de Banderas, which is the capital of the municipality, in the West direction.
