The town of San José (Chiapas) belongs to the municipality of Chilón. In the list of the most populated towns of the whole municipality, it is the number #636 of the ranking.

The locality was formerly known as San José Chapapuhil, but changed its name a few years ago. This town decided to be annexed to Nuevo Jotoaquil in the year 2019. The inhabitants of this community decided to change its name in 2015.
