The town of Paraje Barra Prieta belongs to the municipality of Villa de Tututepec de Melchor Ocampo (State of Oaxaca). The Magical Town of Santa Catarina Juquila is 55 minutes away by car (50 km).

The locality was formerly known as Rancho Barreto, but changed its name a few years ago. This town decided to change its name in the year 2019.
