The town of Etchoropo belongs to the municipality of Huatabampo (State of Sonora). It's a beach town: the beach of Playa Huatabampito is 18 km away. Of all the towns in the municipality, it occupies the number #9 in terms of number of inhabitants.

The locality was formerly known as Loma de Etchoropo, but changed its name a few years ago. This town decided to disannex from Loma de Etchoropo in the year 2011. In the year 2010, the locality changed its name.
