Hundreds of inhabitants of the town of Tlaltetela suffer from a strange disease, which causes paralysis from head to toe due to an incurable neurodegenerative and progressive disorder known as "Spinocerebellar ataxia 7". In a matter of a short time, this disease causes them to lose sight, speech, and paralysis of feet and hands, although they keep their brain lucid, but trapped in a body that stops working.

Ataxia is a disease that usually affects 1 in 100,000 people, but in this locality the prevalence is soaring. With 15,000 inhabitants in the whole municipality, in 2017 there were 80 reported cases and another 300 were awaiting diagnosis. Thus, the prevalence of Ataxia in Tlaltetela is 1,500 per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the highest rates in the world. Over a period of 170 years, the gene has been identified in eight generations and today affects children aged 5 and adults aged 45, who face immobility.
